Microsoft Kinect for Windows goes live on February 1

It's official: Microsoft Kinect for Windows goes resilient on February 1. Declared by Steve Ballmer at Microsoft's unalterable CES keynote, the study is forthcoming with the formalized Microsoft Kinect SDK, which has been in beta testing since June 2011, and includes Warm Mode, a setting to think and tag objects as surrounding as 50cm forth - perfect for at-the-desk use. Ready for pre-order at River for $249.99, Kinect for Windows is accomplishment to unstoppered the threshold to all kinds of new experiences in Windows, from play to realistic keyboards and remembering software.

An unreciprocated topic at this instance, though, is whether or not the new instrumentation give utilise with the open-sourced drivers currently provision so overmuch creativity in the developer group. The new instrumentality appears to hold updated code and perhaps new hardware, so more hacking may be indispensable to straighten it activity. The box attending on Amazon says "FOR Commercialised USE ONLY" and is tagged as a "Kinect for Windows Commercial Software Developer Kit (SDK)." Microsoft is stating that they faculty not be charging for the SDK, which is a fortunate abstract for developers superficial to pioneer the occurrence technology, though it appears they testament suspended by Microsoft.

Initially Microsoft had no plans to freeing any tools to the accord for Kinect, but so more innovative and turn things came from the hacked drivers that they changed their minds. It's a smashing relocation for Microsoft, as crowdsourcing new products, services and ideas is a win-win for everyone. Let's trust that Redmondians maintain to wreak with the unprotected maker vocation with the Kinect for Windows to modify certain everything soothes activity.

As a divagation to the Kinect for Windows proclamation, Microsoft also managed to supernatural out the CES chance by transfer out a sing that herb unfilmed CES-related tweets. Here at the ExtremeTech trap we have never seen anything quite equal it. With it state Microsoft's inalterable CES showing, achievement out with a bolt is likely what it willful - but this was operation of similar exploit out with the ablution surroundings from Psycho. Rumors of Xbox 720 and PS4 in E3 2012?

According to third-party sources, E3 2012 will feature the successors to both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Add to that the Wii U, and this marks the first time in E3′s 17-year history that three new, competing consoles will be so directly comparable.

While we’ve heard rumors of the next-gen Xbox’s appearance at E3 2012 for months now, it’s news of the PS4 — or whatever Sony decides to call it — that comes as a surprise. Execs at the PlayStation firm have made it clear to third-parties that “they will not be left behind this time,” referencing the PS3′s later launch relative to its Microsoft competitor.

Which console are you looking forward to the most? Personally, I just want to see the technology evolve so that developers can keep pushing the boundaries of the cutting-edge.

Toshiba to ship glasses-free 3D TV to US early this year

It's not a big surprise after launching in Germany and Japan, but Toshiba PR has confirmed to us and CNET that the company's 3,840x2,160 resolution autostereoscopic 3DTV will make its US debut in the first quarter of 2012, matching the "end of fiscal year" prediction we'd heard previously.

There's no details on pricetag or model #, but given its $10,000~ sticker price overseas, we'd start shaking out those couch cushions now.

The LCD maintains its QuadHD resolution when displaying 2D content, however switching into 3D mode drops the resolution to 720p. Other than removing the need for viewers to wear glasses to see the effect, it also uses face tracking to fine tune the experience for up to nine people. We'll have more info once it's officially unveiled in a few days, until then feel free to drool over the prototype it showed off last year.

The Android-Powered Smart Watch Marries Luxury and Tech

The Designer Tech Series is supported by the exquisitely crafted, new 2013 Lincoln MKS with Lincoln Drive Control. Now it gets interesting.

Smart technology in watch form has captivated the world since the days of Dick Tracy, but since the turn of the decade, we’ve inched closer to having the entire world on our wrists. The best-selling Kickstarter project in history was a vessel to turn a watch-defaulted iPod nano into a wrist-worn super-device.

The desire for a smart watch solution was so strong that Apple actually included a fitness watch capability in its most recent generation nano. But, there was no fully functional smart watch on the market that was able to function as well as a smartphone with half the size and double the ergonomics.

That is, until now. Italian designer tech company i’m debuted its i’m Watch, which is currently marketed as “the first real smart watch.” The i’m Watch can run nearly anything on its customized Android interface and tethers to your current smartphone (including BlackBerry and iPhone) to handle phone calls, SMS, music and a host of apps. But the i’m is just as focused on beauty as technological practicality.

“Given also our brand’s Italian roots, we naturally do give an extreme emphasis on elegant design, since we profoundly believe that sight and touch deserve an equally important share, just like the more technical aspects,” says Eleonora Cazzaro, press manager at i’m.

Now on the market in Europe — but with a burgeoning office in Silicon Valley and a vendor slot at CES 2012 — an aluminum-bodied i’m Watch will run a minimum of €249 (approximately $322). For those who are looking for a fancier model, the i’m Watch also has a titanium-encased version at a steeper €499 ($644), a carbonium-made product at €999 ($1291) and an ultra-luxurious gold watch with optional diamonds at a staggering €9999 (nearly $13,000).

Mashable spoke with Cazzaro about the design and development of the i’m Watch, and how its luxury form matches its technological function.

Vita sales drop below 3DS, PSP in Japan

The PlayStation Vita appears to be struggling to build an audience in Japan. In its second week on the market, the system sold 72,479 units, according to the Media Create numbers -- outsold by the 3DS, PSP, Wii, and PS3. The software top 20 shows why the 3DS is doing so well right now (it sold 482,200 units): three of the top five games are 3DS releases, including Mario Kart 7 (#1), Super Mario 3D Land (#3), and Monster Hunter Tri-G (#4).

In fact, no Vita games at all appear in the top 20 -- though that makes sense, given the relatively lacking hardware sales and the availability of all retail games on PSN at lower prices.

20 unmissable games from 2011

Has there ever been anything like it? There have arguably been more huge titles released in the last 12 months than during any other window in history, and it's made for a corking - not to mention expensive - year for gamers.

We've seen remakes and sequels smash our expectations into the stratosphere, while new IP has appeared out of nowhere to steal our hearts.
New instalments of pretty much every major series going nearly wore our thumbs down to the bone, and yet there was STILL time to announce more great games and some new consoles too.
So before we turn our eyes onto 2012's upcoming embarrassment of riches (Mass Effect 3, BioShock Infinite, Halo 4 and many more!)
it's time to celebrate a truly unforgettable chapter of gaming.
We've put together a list of 20 games release in 2011 that should not be missed. If you find there are any games on this list you haven't played, we recommend firing up your nearest internet browser or heading to your local retailer and picking these up. They're unmissable.

Okamiden - Nintendo DS

The long-awaited Okami sequel takes the DS to new interactive highs as the stylus becomes the Celestial Brush. Criminally overlooked, we reckon.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Fortune - PS3

More of the same for Nathan's third excursion - but given that Uncharted 2 was sublime, this is exactly what we wanted. Uncharted's cinematics have always been a cut above, and Drake's return brings with it some of the finest acting we've ever seen in digital form

L.A. Noire

The moody LA detective-'em-up drags the point-'n'-click into this generation by its lapels, roughs it up a little and dumps it in a staggeringly accurate sandbox. Truth, doubt, or lie? Truth all the way! Rockstar's amazing MotionScan technology set a whole new standard for facial modelling.

Dead Space 2

Dead Space 2 kicked off the year with a heart-pounding, underwear ruining jaunt through an alien-infested city so unsettling it really made us get scared of our own shadows. The most terrifying beginning of 2011 sees Isaac - helplessly trapped in a straitjacket - sprinting through a Necromorph- riddled hospital with salivating mutants hot on his tail. Aaaargh!

Little Big Planet 2

How do you top a game where you build your own levels? By creating one where you can build your own games! LBP 2 offers game modding for the masses, supported by one of the most vibrant and creative console communities ever.

Total War: Shogun 2 - PC

The ultimate in strategy game refinement, Shogun 2 takes everything that's great about the Total War franchise and improves it... and improves it... and improves it... and, well, you get the picture!

Bulletstorm

Epic's epically epic blaster proves that there's still plenty of room in the first person shooter genre for innovation. It isn't just about getting kills: it's all about getting stylish, disgusting kills. And swearing loads while you do.

Xenoblade Chronicles - Nintendo Wii

Wii games are coming thin and slow now, but clearly Nintendo have been saving the best 'til last. Xenoblade Chronicles bowled us over when its surprise localisation gave the lovely, sprawling Japanese role-playing game to the West.

Battlefield 3

The single-player mode divides opinion, but its multiplayer option - particularly on PC- is a masterclass in how to make the complete online game. War has certainly never looked as good as it does in Battlefield 3. We're not sure if even real life has the visual fidelity to match it...

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Controversial content can't stop Modern Warfare 3 from being the go-to shooter of the year. Despite all of Infinity Ward's internal reshuffling, there's barely a blemish to be found.

Dirt 3

Dirt never lacked for edge-of-the-seat racing, but the tricksy Gymkhana mode and top-notch weather effects ramp up the series' thrills and brake fluid spills a few notches further.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings - PC

CD Project's saucy RPG sequel is still in production for the Xbox 360 for a 2012 release, but wowed the PC crowd earlier this year. Our one grumble? It's tough - but that issue's now been patched!

Mario Kart 7 - Nintendo 3DS

One of the most iconic party series in history blazes its way onto the 3DS, and the tuned-up racing means this entry drives away with a cup and leaves the rest choking on its exhaust fumes.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Not only did Human Revolution manage to do the seemingly impossible and live up to the Deus Ex name, it also succeeded in delivering diverse options so robust that the individual shooting, stealthing and hacking paths could easily have carried the entire game on their own.

Forza Motorsport 4 - Xbox 360

Petrolheads everywhere wept oily tears of joy when they discovered how vast, how varied and how stupendously polished Forza 4 really was. Gran what?

FIFA 12

"Football perfection," we said, and all the world agreed! It's the most beautiful game ever based on the beautiful game: dribbling around last year's instalment with ease.

Portal 2

Your Golden Joystick GOTY-winner took a quirky three-hour game and made a sizeable masterpiece. Also, it does something few other games manage: it's tremendously funny, and sustains its humour throughout. Still Alive was always going to take some beating, but Jonathan Coulton's end ditty Want You Gone comes mighty close to doing it.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - Nintendo Wii

Ninty rounded off 25 years of Zelda brilliance with a chapter that simply changed everything. The series has never felt as fresh or as surprising as it does in Skyward Sword.

Batman: Arkham City

Move over GoldenEye, there's a new licensed king in town. Rocksteady's vision for Batman is as well crafted as Nolan's or Morrison's, and a new yardstick for every tie-in to be measured up against. The ending has to go down as one of the bravest, most shocking conclusions ever. Who would have thought DC would allow Rocksteady to change the landscape of their world so dramatically?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

A world with endless possibilities; a story with uncountable permutations; a game unlike any other. Our undisputed GOTY does things no current generation game should ever be able to do, and does them superbly. There are hundreds of hours of content to root out and enjoy, and almost every major interaction with an in-game character comes pre-loaded with a range of moral choices to pick from. And even when you think you've finished it you really haven't - the radiant quest system will create an endless string of thieving and assassination and exploration quests to wring every last drop out of the land. Did we mention it's simply gorgeous, too? RPGs suddenly have an awful lot to live up to in a post-Skyrim world.

LunaTik Touch Pen for Tablets Kickstarter Project Launches

A new project has started on Kickstarter. This time the product being built is the LunaTik Touch Pen. The new pen is designed to work on both the iPad (and other tablets) as well as paper.

Paper and pen will never be replaced. However, more and more people are embracing their iPads and tablets to take notes and capture ideas in a new hybrid analog-digital workflow. These users continuously switch between paper and touch screen during the day. This means they require both a traditional ink pen and a digital stylus.
MINIMAL is raising funding to build the pens. At the moment they are aiming to ship the pens in April 2012 subject to hitting the $75,000 goal. At the time of writing this the team had pledges of $46,527 with 59 days to go. Looking at the speed at which funding has come in, we expect to see the goal reached far quicker.
Take a look at the video below to see what the pen is made of and the ideas behind it. To pledge money now, visit the Kickstarter page.

Seagate 4TB GoFlex Desk External HDD

Seagate 4TB GoFlex Desk External HDD Seagate 4TB GoFlex Desk External HDD
I’ve just bought an external HDD last week and it was Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB. The transfer rate from my computer to the drive or vice versa was really fast because it uses USB 3.0 technology and I was really satisfied with the money I have spent. Recently they have launched their latest External Hard Drivethe Seagate 4TB GoFlex Desk, featuring USB 3.0 connection in a 3.5-inch form factor which is also backward compatible with USB 2.0. Like other members of the GoFlex Family, the GoFlex Desk allows users to change adapters to work with a range of interfaces (USB, FireWire, eSATA. It comes pre-loaded with the backup software that provides automatic, continuous data backup with encryption for all your files. The company’s GoFlex Desk for Mac hard drive offers similar features but comes pre-formatted in the HFS+ format.

The only cons of this external drive in my opinion is that it needs to be connected to the power supply to work compared to the FreeAgent GoFlex which can be use as an ordinary USB drive, insert to the port copy/paste and you are done. That is the main reason why I bought the FreeAgent (Bought it for 5000 pesos) not the GoFlex Desk because I really want it to be portable and can be easily use w/o the use of power supply cord anymore. The GoFlex Desk is retailing for $250 on Seagate’s website and comes with a two year warranty.

LG Announces World’s Largest OLED TV Panel

LG‘s upcoming OLED TV panel measures 55 inches and comes with a contrast ratio of over 100,000:1, the company has announced.
The panel is also just 5 mm thin and has a color gamut that is “wider” than that produced by LCD panels. All of these characteristics make it a candidate for bringing OLED TV technology to the masses in a market that’s still dominated by LCDs.
“Although OLED technology is seen as the future of TV display, the technology has been limited to smaller display sizes and by high costs, until now. LG Display’s 55-inch OLED TV panel has overcome these barriers,” said Sang Beom Han, CEO and Executive Vice President of LG Display.
Of course, we’ll hear more of this panel at the next CES, along with those WiDi-supporting CINEMA 3D Smart TVs LG has announced earlier this month.
